Miami Police Break Up Occupy Camp, Citing Unsanitary, Unsafe Conditions

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scores of police swept through the downtown location of Occupy Miami last night, ejecting several dozen demonstrators and arresting a few of them while shutting down the protest camp after three and a half months, reports the Miami Herald. The police, wearing riot gear and banging batons on their plastic shields, cleared demonstrators from within half a-dozen blocks of the camp site. They also tore down tents and makeshift dwellings left on the site.
The operation was carried out almost completely without violence, though some of the demonstrators said one of their number was clubbed when caught up in an advancing police line. Six Occupy Miami protesters refused to leave, staying inside a flimsy barricade of plywood and old mattresses. Police detained them briefly, but when they were offered a last chance to walk away without being arrested, they did. Occupy Miami leaders said their movement would simply spread to other camps around the county. The group's continued camping permit was denied because of "unsanitary site conditions and unsafe activities, which have resulted in a number of arrests by the Miami-Dade Police Department," said Miami-Dade spokeswoman Suzy Trutie. Occupy Miami leaders conceded that there have been as many as 50 arrests around the camp site since it was set up last October.
Editor: What? Police acting responsibly? Kudos!!  Now will Miami Police go tell the other Police Departments around the country how to act!! and not being afraid of the world wide web seeing the videotape.
New York Prosecutors Subpoena Occupy Protester’s Twitter Posts
Occupy Wall Street protester Malcolm Harris says he’s not sure why the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has subpoenaed his Twitter posts.
Harris, a freelance writer and editor, was charged with disorderly conduct after his arrest during an October protest on the Brooklyn Bridge, report Reuters and International Business Times. Harris’ lawyer has filed a motion to quash the subpoena seeking Harris’ Twitter posts over a three month period ending on Dec. 15. The subpoena also seeks Harris’ email address and user information.
Harris says he’s not sure which Tweets interested prosecutors because Twitter doesn’t permit users to review all their old tweets. He acknowledges, however, that he was behind “the Radiohead thing,” a false claim that the band would be playing in Zuccotti Park, according to International Business Times. Harris previously told theVillage Voice that he made the claim to get more people to the park.
Editor: Disorderly conduct?????? Now the government wants to use this bogus crap to REALLY hit this guy.  See how sneaky government is?  They can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars pursuing a charge that is generally a ticket and a fine of about $100. Huge waste of taxpayers money and abuse of power not acceptable in a "free" society.
Podcast:
A new podcast in the Supreme Court Landmarks series is available. This episode focuses on the 1963 U.S. Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright, which deals with the Sixth Amendment right to legal counsel. In each podcast we discuss a landmark case with a law professor covering the case’s background and why it is important today. Visit theSupreme Court Landmarks page for more episodes.
Editor: the unsung hero was a local trial lawyer who helped Gideon (the homeless guy)  in the new trial wherein Gideon was acquitted in 20 minutes (after serving many years in prison). The trial lawyer did the investigation the police should have done in the first place.
Gay Tiger Attacks Santorum
Animal 'Taunted' by Bestiality Remarks
LAS VEGAS (The Borowitz Report) - After making remarks in which he equated homosexuality with bestiality, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum was attacked at a Las Vegas hotel’s jungle habitat by a gay tiger.
Mr. Santorum had scheduled a campaign stop at the hotel and casino where he made his remarks about homosexuality and bestiality, not realizing that he was standing within earshot of a white tiger with a homosexual lifestyle.
According to onlooker Tracy Klujian, 27, "The way that tiger started growling during the speech, you could tell that it felt like it was being taunted and whatnot."
As Mr. Santorum's remarks about homosexuality and bestiality reached their crescendo, the irate tiger leaped over an eighteen-foot barrier and began mauling the presidential candidate, ripping his sweater vest to shreds.
Within minutes, police responding to a 911 call rushed to the scene, where they fired tranquilizer darts at both the tiger and Mr. Santorum, who had continued to make his inflammatory remarks throughout the mauling.
According to one aide, the unfortunate tiger attack incident had done nothing to change Mr. Santorum's position on gay marriage: "Not only that, but now he's opposed to tigers marrying other tigers."
Remember Mel Gibson’s movie, “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”? Two years ago (at least) he went to Mexico, relocated prisoners from a jail, upset everyone, and made this film that no one wanted to see. This was during “Edge of Darkness” tanking, the whole non stop scandal with girlfriend Oksana, the $500 million divorce, the anti Semitic stuff, and “The Beaver” embarrassing everyone. So now what do with “Vacation”? Apparently it’s been retitled–”Get the Gringo.” And according to reports in the the trades it’s going straight to Video on Demand on May 1st. This is because, let’s face it, no theater owner wants a Mel Gibson movie–not even “Lethal Weapon 5″ or “The Beaver 2.” It’s a smart move for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. They’ll charge $10.99 per viewing. Mel’s remaining audience can plunk down their dough. Gibson has relatively no future in regular movie releases. He still plans on making a movie about Judah and the Maccabbees–a Chanukah story told by an anti-Semite. Instead of real oil that lasted eight days, Mel’s movie will likely explain this [...]
CASES OF NOTE
Both parties split the blame for accident, jury finds
A driver who claimed a lower back injury in a left-turn crash recovered $6,500. Yolanda Valenzuela was driving her truck south on South Central Expressway, in Dallas. Orlando Hall, was driving an 18-wheeler for his employer, Pacer Cartage. He was heading north on the expressway. Hall made a left turn and they collided. The plaintiff was diagnosed with lumbar sprains and strains, and underwent chiropractic care for several weeks. The defense's accident reconstruction expert testified that Valenzuela had sufficient time to react to Hall's left turn. The jury found each party 50 percent liable, which reduced the $13,000 award.
India Takes First Place . . . In The Worst Air Pollution In The World
India’s booming economy has long had a dark side in the form of rampant pollution. Like China, the country has gone full throttle on a production-oriented society while ignoring rising pollution and illnesses associated with pollutants. Now, in a study of 132 countries, India has reached the bottom of the list of dirty air countries or, to put a more positive spin, the top spot on the most dirty countries. Nevertheless, the government is not concerned and assured the public that this is really not that bad.
