Skills

Remorse.  After depositions in Houston today I had a choice of a celebratory lunch or feed a family of four for a week. My only defense is that where I live 365 days a year, fine dining is not even an option.

To those who feel the need to publicly criticize my photographic skills, I'll make this deal with you:  I will work harder to take better pictures if you will work as hard on your personality defect.

The Brief: Planned Parenthood Videos Yield Indictments

by Jacob Sanchez and John Reynolds | Jan. 26, 2016

The Big Conversation

An investigation in Harris County into allegations that Planned Parenthood was illegally selling fetal tissue yielded indictments on Monday against the makers of undercover recordings of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Houston.
Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast in Houston, meanwhile, was cleared of breaking any laws, reported the Tribune’s Alexa Ura.
A series of undercover videos made of Planned Parenthood officials nationwide discussing how they obtain fetal tissue for research became a focal point of anti-abortion activists last year and spurred the Republican leadership in this state to initiate investigations into Planned Parenthood.
“Among the undercover videos were recordings of staff at Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, where two abortion foes in April misrepresented themselves as research executives and provided fake California drivers’ licenses,” Ura wrote. “The videographers visited the facility last April ‘under the guise of discussing tissue research with our clinic research staff,’ according to Planned Parenthood.”
Planned Parenthood clinics in Texas do not currently donate tissue for medical research, Ura wrote.
The state’s Republican leaders said late Monday afternoon that the grand jury action would not end the state’s own investigation into Planned Parenthood.
“Nothing about today’s announcement in Harris County impacts the state’s ongoing investigation," Gov. Greg Abbott said in statement. "The State of Texas will continue to protect life, and I will continue to support legislation prohibiting the sale or transfer of fetal tissue.”
Disclosure: Planned Parenthood was a corporate sponsor of The Texas Tribune in 2011. A complete list of Tribu

New Jersey Man Pays Homeless Man To Pour Boiling Hot Coffee Over His Head . . . Police Decline To Press Charges

by jonathanturley
Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 8.38.18 PMThere is a truly disgraceful story out of Lakewood, New Jersey where homeless man Ronald Leggatt, 65, was offered $5 by a stranger to pour a hot cup of coffee over his head -- twice. Carlos Mejia, 22, of Jackson, posted a video of Leggatt discussing the demeaning act. Mejia witnessed the scene and at first thought the man was going to help Leggatt and was horrified as he was paid to pour the coffee on his head. The coffee left burn marks on Leggett's face.Mejia confronted the man who paid for the act and said that he was an Orthodox Jew, who told him that nothing would happen to him since "we run the town." He was right about one thing. The police located that sadist but decided that there was no crime to charge because the act by Leggatt was voluntary.

Kennedy Airport Allows Another International Flight To Skip Customs

by jonathanturley
Transportation_Security_Administration_Logo.svg250px-SeaTacTerminalSecurityStories of this kind leave me baffled. With all of the money and harsh measures imposed on the public by the Transportation Security Administration, the TSA itself seems barely accountable for continual stories of bungling and gross negligence. Recently, it was revealed that an international flight was allowed to simply go directly from the aircraft to the streets without passing through customs. People were horrified. Now it has happened again with American Airlines Flight 1223 from Cancun, Mexico and one passenger even alerted the TSA at the time and was told to just leave with the rest of the passengers from Mexico. The only reassuring thought is that any drug mule or terrorist would have assumed that this was a trick since no one is this dumb.
