Tort Reform and Nursing Homes

The closer it gets to 5 pm, the more I'm in a silly mood.... which I think is unbecoming of a man my age.

End the war on drugs... end the war AGAINST poor people.  If we must have a war, let's start one against things that hurt Americans far more than ISIS.  Let's start a war against big pharmacy, corrupt wall street practices, voter repression.  Let's re-start the war on poverty.  While it may not help defense contractors, it's cheaper and will really help a lot of Americans and we will have a stronger country..

Thinking about getting my own personal pocket wi-fi.  It could be a chic magnet when I go to Sealy discotheques.   Well.... the few remaining ones that still allow me to go there.

Confusing. I thought a month or two ago Trump kept saying he liked Cruz.

I wonder how other employers feel when they see the look of joy and happiness on their employees faces when they storm out of the place at 5pm so happy to leave the sweat shop behind.  It's never a golden moment for me.

Study: Rate of Heat Absorption Of Oceans Has Doubled Since 1997

by jonathanturley
earth-screensaver_largeWe have another study indicating the rapidly worsening situation due to global climate change. Astudy published in the journal Nature Climate Change, shows that the amount of man-made heat energy absorbed by the seas has doubled since 1997. That absorption is much higher than anticipated and portends greater threats to ocean life as well as the continuing worsening of intense storms.

Leading Turkish Opposition Figure Put Under Investigation After Defending Dozens of Arrested Academics Who Signed Peace Petition

by jonathanturley
220px-Recep_Tayyip_ErdoganWe recently discussed the latest authoritarian move by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in rounding up dozens of academics who signed a peace petition. The move was denounced throughout the world, but Erdogan is clearly unmoved. Now, those who objected to the crackdown and loss of the freedom of speech are themselves being targeted by the government. Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu is facing arrest after saying that "Academics who express their opinions have been detained one by one on instructions given by a so-called dictator." Prosecutors launched an investigation into Kilicdaroglu's comments on charges of "openly insulting the president."

Conservationists, Hunters, and Historians Losing Fight To Protect Teddy Roosevelt’s Famous Badlands Ranch From Gravel Company

by jonathanturley
1452694218969One of the thrills for many people in North Dakota has been to visit the Elkhorn Ranch of former President Teddy Roosevelt in the Badlands along the Little Missouri River. While long listed as one of the “11 most endangered historic places” in the nation by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Elkhorn Ranch was the beloved location where Roosevelt hunted, bred cattle and began his writings on conservation. Although the government U.S. Forest Service purchased 4,400 acres, including the ranch, in 2007 as part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, it did not acquire the mineral rights. Now, over the intense objections of Roger Lothspeich, owner of Elkhorn Minerals, intended to mine gravel and destroy much of the area around the historic site. In response to a national outcry from historians and hunters, Lothspeich said “There is a lot of gravel to mine. I will keep on mining year after year, for years to come, and will not stop until I get all the gravel. That’s the type of individual I am. I just don’t give up.”

Cops Found Ted Cruz's Wife on Roadside, Thought She Was a Danger to Herself

Inside Edition
Ted Cruz's wife, Heidi, was once so depressed that a police officer wrote: "I believed that she was a danger to herself."
The incident happened in 2005 shortly after Heidi quit her high-powered job at the White House and moved to Austin, Texas, to be with her husband, who was state solicitor general.
Police responded to a 911 call about a woman in a pink shirt sitting next to an expressway and found Mrs. Cruz sitting on the ground ten feet from speeding traffic with her head in her hands.
The story appeared in Monday’s New York Times and was first reported by Buzzfeed.
Fast forward to today and Heidi has taken a leave of absence from her job as an investment manager for Goldman Sachs to help raise money for her husband's presidential campaign.
They have two little girls, Catherine Christiane, 4, and Caroline Camille, 7.

In his book, A Time For TruthTed wrote that Heidi’s moving to Texas "led to her facing a period of depression."
She rebounded from her depression and now says: “I want to use it to strengthen people around me and to recognize that we all have rough patches,” according to The New York Times.
