Executive Order

Today the lady at the laundry mat asked me "What kind of lawyer are you?". I gave her my stock answer, "short, fat, kinda old".  Why do I do that?  For 30 years I've never benefited from that response.  No one has ever thought it was funny except me.

Why does Trump think we care and that it matters to us who he doesn't like?  Quit wasting your tweets Donald.  It simply doesn't matter to us.  It makes no difference in our lives and is unimportant to America.

Upon learning that Trump is expected to issue Executive Order declaring that all things critical of him don't exist,  his followers celebrated chanting this was long overdue.

Did The White House Staff Try To Coerce The Morning Joe Hosts With A National Enquirer Threat?

by jonathanturley
UnknownIn the aftermath of the vicious tweets against MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, there was an intriguing allegation that three top Trump Administration officials called Joe Scarborough and threatened that, if he did not call Trump to apologize for his negative comments, the National Enquirer would run a hit piece on the hosts.  The allegation is deeply troubling and, while it would not necessarily constitute a crime, it would raise a serious question of abuse of office in the use of staff to convey such an alleged threat.  With all of the understandable passion following the tweets. this is a very significant allegation and one that was not previously disclosed.

Los_Angeles_Community_College_District_LogoA new shocking study has found that 1 in every 5 of the 230,000 in Los Angeles Community College District are homeless and another two-thirds cannot afford food costs.  It is a chilling statistic that offers an insight into economic strata in the country and the marginal economic conditions for so many people.

Sacked: Justice Department Drops Fight To Strip Redskins of Trademark Protections

by jonathanturley
350px-Washington_Redskins_logo.svgWithout fanfare, the Justice Department dropped the long fight over stripping the trademark protections from the Washington Redskins football team as an offensive term.  I have long been a critic of the action taken by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and said at the time that the action was flagrantly unconstitutional.  Now millions have been spent but the case is withdrawn in light of the recent decision in Matal v. Tam.

Williams was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs after Diamond refused to allow Williams to remain free before his Oct. 24 sentencing.

Reports that family of Trump lawyer Sekulow got millions from his nonprofit leads to states' review

Two state attorneys general say they will review the operations of a group run by lawyer Jay Sekulow following reports that the nonprofit funneled millions of dollars to the lawyer, his family and businesses they run.
North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman told the Guardian their offices will be looking into Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism, also known as CASE. Sekulow is a member of the private legal team representing President Donald Trump.
The voting members of the CASE board are Sekulow, his wife and their two sons, the Washington Post reports.
Since 2000, CASE has paid more than $60 million to Sekulow, his family members and companies in which they hold senior positions, the Guardian has reported. From 2011 to 2015, CASE funneled $5.5 million to Sekulow family members and $23 million to their firms for services provided, according to the Washington Post. Questions about payments were also raised by Law.com in 2005 and the Tennessean in 2011.
Some of the money received by Sekulow’s relatives and their businesses between 2011 and 2015 was paid first to the American Center for Law and Justice, another nonprofit that fights court battles on behalf of religious and conservative causes. Televangelist Pat Robertson is president of the ACLJ board, but most of the ACLJ’s budget is funded with money from CASE. Sekulow is the chief counsel for the ACLJ
Of the $23 million paid to businesses owned by Sekulow and his family between 2011 and 2015, $16 million went to the Constitutional Litigation and Advocacy group, a law firm half-owned by Sekulow, according to the Post.
CASE solicits money from donors; earlier this month fundraisers were asking for donations to help repeal the Affordable Care Act. The group has filed several law-related suits.
Robertson told the Post that an IRS review has found the nonprofits to be “in full compliance with all applicable tax law.” In addition, the financial arrangements between the ACLJ, CASE and related entities have been reviewed by outside compensation experts and determined to be reasonable, he said.
