Ooops Sorry about that 20 years in prison.

Let's just say I am glad no food critics followed me around today.

Report: Coats and Rogers Told Investigators That Trump Asked Them To Publicly State That There Was No Evidence of Russian Collusion

by jonathanturley
That did not take long.  Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers met with Special Counsel Robert Mueller to discuss the subjects that they declined to discuss with Congress.  Congress then released the information.  It now appears that congressional briefings from the Special Counsel are proxy press conferences in this increasingly strange process.  As expected, Coats and Rogers admitted that Trump did in fact ask them to tell the public that there was no evidence of collusion between his campaign and the Russians.  That was, again, an inappropriate and ill-considered request.  However, the disclosure raises a far more worrisome questions with regard to the role of White House Counsel Donald F. "Don" McGahn II.  The two intelligence chiefs said that they took anticipated the questions over their conversations and asked McGahn if there was an executive privilege assertion. McGahn simply never responded.  That is a highly disturbing account.  Executive privilege is not some tactical toy. It has been defended as a core protection of inherent presidential powers.  No high ranking officials should be sent into a committee without a clear understanding of the status of information or conversations relevant to congressional inquiries.  The non-response was either negligence by the White House Counsel or, more likely and more seriously, a conscious decision to avoid the politically risky decision of either allowing answers or publicly preventing answers.

Did Henry Kissinger Push Nixon To Assault Daniel Ellsberg?

by jonathanturley
An 18-page investigation memorandum has been obtained by NBC News that raises some disturbing questions about the Nixon White House and specifically the role of former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.  The memo details the campaign of political violence by Nixon aides.  The memo references a plot to have Daniel Ellsberg beaten up by surrogates of the Nixon Administration.  Kissinger has been cited as one of those pushing Nixon to deal with Ellsberg.

And he has apparently kept it to himself.

My guess is that he had hoped to tweet them to death.

Woman awaiting retrial for lawyer boyfriend's slaying is investigated in venue motion forgeries

Shutterstock
A woman who is awaiting a retrial in the 2012 slaying of her lawyer boyfriend is being investigated in connection with submission of phony court documents.
Prosecutors in Kentucky investigated after noticing that many of the 156 affidavits supporting a change of venue for Shayna Hubers had signatures with “striking similarities,” according to a motion. Campbell County prosecutor Michelle Snodgrass said a notary admitted that 118 of the signatures were forged. Cincinnati.comWCPO.com and Fox 19 covered the development.
One of the forged signatures was that of an assistant commonwealth’s attorney, Snodgrass said. “To respond to these affidavits, submitted by Ms. Hubers, would be to dignify them as more than they truly are, felonies,” she wrote.
Snodgrass also said the change of venue motion represented that there were 171 affidavits from Northern Kentucky residents supporting the change, but only 156 affidavits were submitted.
Hubers is awaiting retrial in the slaying of Cincinnati lawyer Ryan Poston.
Huber’s lawyers, David Eldridge and Jeff Lawson, said in a statement that they relied on what they believed to be a reputable investigative firm to assist in collecting the affidavits. The statement said the lawyers were “shocked and saddened” to learn that a notary employed by the firm had allegedly admitted to forging signatures.
Hubers had been convicted in 2015 of killing Poston on the night he was supposed to go on a date with the Miss Ohio USA 2012 contestant. Hubers won a retrial because one of the jurors had not disclosed he was a felon.
Hubers had claimed she was acting in self-defense when she killed Poston. But Hubers’ cellmate testified that Hubers laughed about the shooting and said she gave Poston the nose job he always wanted.

Day care providers who blame satanic panic for 21-year prison stint are 'actually innocent,' DA says

A Texas prosecutor is dropping charges against an Austin couple who spent more than 20 years in prison for alleged sexual abuse of a child at their day care center in a case that involved fantastic allegations of satanic rituals.
Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore announced on Tuesday that she is dropping the charges against Dan and Fran Keller because she thinks they are actually innocent of the crime, the Austin American-Statesman reports in stories here and here.
The couple won reversals of their convictions in 2015, but the decision fell short of a full exoneration. Moore’s decision could make the couple eligible for as much as $3.4 million in state compensation.
The Kellers attribute their 1992 convictions to a satanic panic. The three children who accused them told increasingly lurid stories of dismembered babies, desecrated corpses, baby-eating sharks, videotaped sex with children, and blood-laced Kool-Aid. No such evidence was ever found.
In its 2015 decision, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed the conviction because a doctor who testified about indications of sexual abuse of the child recanted his testimony. According to the court, the doctor later concluded that indications of what he thought to be sexual trauma were actually normal variations in anatomy.
Fran Keller, 67, was elated by the prosecutor’s decision. “It seems like we can breathe again,” she told the American-Statesman. “We can sleep again without nightmares.”

Lambda lawyer explains why he and five others quit president's HIV/AIDS council

Shutterstock
A lawyer at Lambda Legal says frustration with the Trump administration led him and five others to resign from a presidential advisory group that provides recommendations on treatment and prevention of HIV.
In a column for Newsweek, Lamba Legal’s HIV project director Scott Schoettes says President Donald Trump “simply does not care” about their concerns. Schoettes also spoke with the National Law Journal (sub. req.) and the Washington Post about his decision to resign from the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, known as PACHA.
Schoettes ticks off the reasons why he lost confidence in the president. During the primaries, Trump refused to meet with HIV advocates. The day the president took office, the Office of National AIDS Policy website was taken down. Trump still hasn’t appointed anyone to lead the AIDS policy office.
The final straw, Schoettes wrote, was the American Health Care Act, legislation passed by the House of Representatives that would repeal the Affordable Care Act and reform health care.
Before the Affordable Care Act, people with HIV who had no insurance through their employer were priced out of the market, he said. And ACA’s Medicaid expansion increased access to the program for people with HIV.
“The Trump Administration has no strategy to address the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic, seeks zero input from experts to formulate HIV policy, and—most concerning—pushes legislation that will harm people living with HIV and halt or reverse important gains made in the fight against this disease,” Schoettes writes.
A White House spokesperson said the Trump administration is “working diligently on health-related policies that will improve the lives of all Americans.” The spokersperson said staff members with the White House Domestic Policy Council have met with HIV/AIDS advocates, and Trump has hired an HIV/AIDS and infectious disease expert, Katy Talento, who will advise the Domestic Policy Council.
